Mirror Mirror Review

by Coffinshaker on April 12, 2012 at 2:52 am

Movie Mirror Mirror 2012I’m not going to even try to explain the premise of this movie because if you don’t already know what Snow White is then, well, get out of my house!  Go on!  Get!  So yes, Mirror Mirror is based “loosely” on the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.  Of course, it isn’t just a simple remake, but a re-imagining of the story as told with a kickass princess finally sticking it to the evil witch.

That, well, pretty much sums it up.  You have Snow White, the initial damsel in distress, locked away in a castle by the illegitimate queen that’s been sucking away the wealth of the people to finance her lavish soirees.  Then you get that modern bit where the damsel becomes the dynamo with some 80s montage pumping up and confronts her evil step mother in an epic battle.  While I hate to say it, it does play into the more modern day role reversal (the anti-mario if you will) that isn’t bad, just a tad over done.  And even then, (oh btw spoilers) barely gets to use her new found powers of self confidence to “slay” the bad guys.  For the last part of the movie, I was expecting some major Kill Bill butt kickery, but it seemed to let me down quite a bit with a lackluster boss battle.  It’s like having a quicktime event on the final stage of a game; quite a bit less pizazz than you were expecting.

Some of the other features of the movie were especially confusing.  For a picturegraph titled “Mirror Mirror”, you would expect a deeper level of development with this mysterious and magical artifact.  Instead, we get some sort of adapted lore that never gets explained.  I get the whole “leave some to the imagination” thing, but you don’t make a movie called Pelican Brief and not have any under pants in it… Hmm, that was especially off topic.  Point being, it’s like Lord of the Rings and not explaining what the ring is.  The scenes with the mirror were very magical indeed; a whole new adaptation that was very intriguing, but it did little to explain why the queen has a doppelganger and what happened to Jambi.  Is she a witch?  Does she have a split personality?  What’s going on here!  Maybe there’s something deeper I was supposed to pick up, but I still feel that the “mirror mirror” part was never explored deeply enough to catch my interest.

Now, all this might sound pretty bad and you’d expect a low rating like so many have given it, but, well… It was a good movie!  It was fun!  And I absolutely loved it!  The visuals were quite fantastic; such as the scenes with the castle overlooking a frozen lake and even the design of the forest house.  (Ok, one thing bugs me… Who the hell builds a castle on a cliff over a lake?!  Very poor urban planning if I do say so myself!)  One thing with the visuals is that they take place in a very inclosed setting.  You have the castle, the forest, the tree house, and the town…  And the mirror village thing, but like 99% of that looked cg so it doesn’t count.  I can appreciate the economies of film production, but I could do well with a little more diversity in the setting.  That said, the areas that were involved were amazingly crafted!  The palace was extensively lavish and decadent.  I would hire those interior designers in a heart beat; once I win the lotto of course.  And a lot of care was taken with every scene.  As an artist, I can find little fault with any frame and its composition.  Very well done I say!

Snow White in Mirror Mirror 2012The acting was pretty alright.  And I mean that in the best of ways.  I wouldn’t say everyone gave an Oscar winning hard hitting tear dropping performance, but for what it was, not bad guys.  Julia Roberts and Nathan Lane play off each other very well!  I’d love to see more of them together in the future.  Lily Collins, once I got the robotic lyrics of In The Air Tonight out of my head, has quickly become one of my new favorites.  She might be a little green behind the ears, but she has some good skill and definitely the look to go far.  In fact, throughout her portrayal of Snow White, I couldn’t help but see strong similarities to Audrey Hepburn, whether intentional or not.  And in my book… That’s a very good thing!  Armie Hammer played his role to a comical tee as the prince you’d love to drop kick if you ever met him in real life.  I don’t think it’s hard to imagine his character with a double layer of popped collar polos and some khakis.  Not bashing the guy, no; he did a great job of playing the pompous prince that probably annoyed everyone as a child.  Then there’s Julia… Let’s just say, I hope my marriage proposal doesn’t get lost in the mail.  She did an amazing job and really carried the movie through.  Can’t say much more than that; she looked like she had a lot of fun with the role and pulled out the most evil witch (spelled with a “b”) character that you’ll fall madly in love with.

This isn’t going to be one of those ground breaking movies that changes all the rules and you’ll be buying the gold box collectors edition BluRay of… BUT, it is a good movie if you are in the mood for some laughs and a decent revamp of an old classic.  (And honestly here, I was never much of a fan of the original, so this goes in my books as probably the best rendition yet.)  Then again, you’ll probably be too busy enamored with Julia, crinkles and all, to even notice any of the movies negatives.

AFK

by Coffinshaker on January 16, 2012 at 3:34 am

Howdy folks, gonna be AFK for like a week or two coming up so I’ll have updates on Wed and Fri for the next two weeks.  This week will be CC shenanigans as usual, and the following will have some guest work by some of my friends, including another one of the collab pages (the phone booth thingy) and maybe another Dodger (he’s America’s sweetheart).

Anyways, see y’allz when I get back!  Behave!  >)

Rollin’ In The Cache

by Coffinshaker on October 13, 2011 at 4:51 pm

Few new upgrades to the site!

* First I added a caching system via Hyper Cache to wordpress.  What this does is makes “static” pages saved in regular HTML and sends those to you before trying to do all the php stuff.  The static html stuff goes MUCH faster than php.  Php stuff makes the server look up things and calculate and whatnot… like a program really… so it stresses the server out and when you’ve got lots of folks trying to do that at once… bad things happen.  Html on the other hand is like a snapshot so it doesn’t make the server think and you get your stuff asap without any server stress!  Yay!  So this should make everything go faster!!

* Second, because of the caching, there are a few bugs… I’m working out getting the new pages to come out at midnight EST on the right days… but if it caches the page, then it doesn’t say there’s a new version soon enough, so it won’t look like I updated.  I’m going to stick with Hyper for a little longer to see if I can fix this, otherwise, I’ll have to find a new one.

* Third… well… one of those caching bugs is that it kills all my old polls!  That’s cause the old ones are php based, so I went with Polldaddy now, which is javascript and wont get messed up by all my caching shenanigans.  Only downside is that it wont make an archive and I’ll either have to close the old ones or remake them… idk…

* Lastly, I added both ContextWeb and Google AdSense ads to that top space.  If you only see my banner for “gaming + geeking” then you’ve got some kind of ad blocker set up… booo… lol, but yeah.  This will help generate a little more cache cash my way.  The only issue I’ve seen is that some ads appear a bit funky and moved over or down by 2-10 pixels… don’t know how to fix that yet.  Just seems to only be on some of the flash ads.  However, I mostly see issues on Internet Explorer… best way to fix this is to download and use Fire Fox!  Not sure on Opera, Chrome, or Safari, but uh… no reason anyone should be using anything other than FF now a days, so… go get it!  XD

New Home Page!

by Coffinshaker on September 6, 2011 at 3:29 pm

I’ve changed the layout a bit!  I hope you all like it!  I figured having all my comics and a bit of archive all in one place would make things much easier for everybody.  That way, you can just bookmark Coffin Comics and see all the latest updates on all my sites!  Woot!  Oh, I also have a new format for my archive (though depending on your response, it might not link to the menu up top).  The new archive will have thumbnails of every comic, an excerpt, and a few tags that I’m probably going to slowly update.

So if you’ve reached this page from another link and have no idea what I’m jabbering about, go to the HOME page now!

If you want to check out the new archive page, either click the MORE under the small archive on the home page, or click THIS LINK.

If you absolutely HATE the new main page, you can update your link to my site with http://coffin-comics.jesterbrand.com/new

So… what do you guys think about the changes?  I’ll probably keep tinkering with the format for some time to come so that it’s really easy to navigate.

IT’S ALIVE!

by Coffinshaker on July 26, 2011 at 7:20 pm

And we’re back! Sorry for being away so long. Had to move everything from one hosting server to another which was a massive pain. So I just got the subdomains fixed! Yay! So I guess everything should be back to normal then. Fixed emails too, which was even worse. uhg! So hopefully I won’t have to do this for a while! And even better, NO 503 ERRORS!!! Yippie!! I can set my own limits, so if I need more bandwidth, it’s just a few bucks more.

But if you have any issues, let me know. In theory, it should all be OK now, but just send me an email if you find anything broken or disappeared.

Downtime

by Coffinshaker on July 19, 2011 at 4:28 pm

NEWS FLASH!!!!
So I just purchased a VPS server space!  I appologize to everyone who has tried to get on my site and received a 503 error with questionable links.  You can thank IXWebhosting for that junk.  So I’m going with MyHosting.com!  Great price (like $10/mo more than I pay now and an A+ rating from the BBB, so lets cross our fingers it’ll work out!  In theory, you should NEVER get an error like that again. HOWEVER, this means I will need to migrate everything over!  This is evil and scary and I have no idea what I’m doing, lol… So, that means I’m going to try and not break everything while moving a ton of stuff.  I will do my best to keep all the comments in order and everything else.  This also means some of my comics may not be up at their scheduled times (like this week’s coffin comics or the next monday’s what’s shakin) since it’s going to take all my concentration to not go insane and run through the streets naked when I finally snap.  So uh… you can always make a donation to my bail money fund… XD

So cross your fingers for me!  I should get everything back in order soon.  Until then, things maybe kinda out of wack for a while.

I’m not sure if wednesday’s comic will be up or not… I’m really going to try to get this all set up today… if things go slow, I might just put it up anyways, but if I get it all transferred, then there will probably be some downtime.  Bottom line, it’ll be up asap… maybe thursday?  idk…

What the Deuce?

by Coffinshaker on July 14, 2011 at 8:40 pm

Ok gang, adding a few new things here.  I’m putting up some affiliate ads to help with paying the bills.  Here’s how it works, I’m going through Amazon (not the biggest payout, but they’re safe enough.  the others could end up charging ME! craziness!) and I’ll have an ad or two on my sites showing some items I think are cool.  Gotta click the item to go to Amazon then buy (hey, if you were gonna get it anyways, then why not send a few buck my way in the process, right?) I think within 1 day… something about cookies.  Mmm… cookies…

Uh, anyways, so… I’m also going to put links to the games I review/parody in my minis as well.  Don’t think I’m going to go insane and be overly nice to any of these… Still gonna toss in my 2 cents as usual, but at least it’ll be another way to help support me while getting things that you want as well.  Also, all my normal links to wiki or wherever will still be bluish purplish, but Amazon links will be Red and Double Underlined like that. So… uh… everybody wins?  Right?  >D

Hope none of this is too obnoxious.  So yeah, if you want to help out the Coffinator 5000, come through here to get some of the games you want or things that looks pretties.  If you reeeeeeeeeeeally are excited to help out, I think you could suggest a product and I’d put up a link.  Don’t think that’s against the TOS.  Probably an easier way… hmm…

Anyways, thanks in advance to everyone that uses this service!  I only get like 4% or so commission from them, but every little bit helps!

Back!

by Coffinshaker on July 6, 2011 at 12:40 am

Hey gang!  I’m back now!  Had some good times, sold a few things, made some new friends… good stuff!  Miami is an interesting place, I must say.  Never knew the city was so big!  Though, I’m thoroughly terrorized by the drivers there, lol!  XD

I’d like to thank my minion for all her help, my family for giving me lodging over the weekend, and alllll the people who came to my booth!  Especially my fans who stopped by to say howdy!  Oh and all the new fans of course!  Welcome!  >D

Ya know, when you’re on lockdown for 4 days, you kinda get to know the people around you, especially when it’s slow!  So I’d like to give a little shout out to the people who helped keep me just a little bit more sane!

First, there were some awesome ladies in the booth next to me who were a lot of fun to talk to!  They totally were a blast!  Kit does some amazing drawing and commission work.  Check out their site!  Silver Tales (here’s the DeviantArt)

Across was a guy, Nathan, from Blue Rose Studios.  Does some really nice stylized work.

Also across, was two nice gentlemen from Power Comix.  Some darn good comicing work worth checking out.

Down the way was Marcos with some real nice painting work!

And on the other side was Scott with some good looking comic/gaming posters.

Last but not least was two kids (ok, young adults) with some crazy talent.  They do chain mail jewelry which is all kinds of amazing!  Check em out at Iron Bulldog Designs.

ALSO:
I’m going to update the shop with some of the new stuff I had at the con.  Gimme a few days though.  Oh, and I started doing some commissions after a little persuasion from my new friend and my minion.  So I’m going to update the shop to allow for that too.  I’ll make another post with some of my doodles from the con and prices and such.

BRB!

by Coffinshaker on June 30, 2011 at 11:41 pm

Alrighty gang, I’m off for another exciting adventure in conland!  Down in Miami this time!  But I probably won’t have interweb access until Tuesday, so you all behave yourselves!  I’ve got the Friday, Monday, and next Wednesday scheduled for you guys.  And I’m leaving out some kibble and a bowl of water, so you should be all taken care of while I’m gone.

See you guys later, unless you live in Miami and stop on by to say “howdy ho”!  I have a few cool new buttons and some wicked new prints for sale!  I’ll post those after the show on my shop site.

Latas!  >D

Site Down!

by Coffinshaker on June 29, 2011 at 3:08 am

Sorry gang for all the downtime today!  But I’m livid!  Like, super duper angry!  My sites were taken down for many hours today for a TOS violation… basically… because I had TOO MUCH TRAFFIC!!  One would think this inconceivable given my hosting plan has unlimited traffic, but apparently it’s a “shared” server and if you do too well then they kick you out.  Good times.  BTW, Never use IXWEBHOSTING.  This is total BS.  The only other option is to pay $60/mo for the dedicated server plan.  While, yes, that would be nice, I can’t afford that.  So, I’m at a bit of an impasse.  I’ve put up a throttle that only 30 page requests per 15seconds, so if you can’t see the page, that’s why.  It’s asinine, but what can you do?  I could jack up the ad space minimum bids, but that could turn on me and net nothing.  Other than that, not sure how I can afford a $720/yr bill in hosting costs, just cause their servers suck.

Man, what’s worse is that I pay a lot of money to get more traffic with advertising.  Glad it’s been working, but it’s really bad when they take down your site for doing well… and losing all that money I spent on ads and the revenue from ads on my sites while it’s down.  An utter disaster!

So if anyone out there has any solutions, like knows a great hosting service that doesn’t have some kind of stupid shared rules policy, then let me know!  I have a hard time understanding how my average 10k pageviews a day can cause catastrophic system failures on their hardware.

Ah well… bleh!  >P

Chachachachanges

by Coffinshaker on June 22, 2011 at 1:41 am

Meh, nothing major really…  but I did change the Archive page.  it’s a list now.  not overly sure how I like it just yet… ideally, I’d want a nice mosaic of the comic thumbnails but until I can get that working without catastrophic website breaking failure (like it does currently), this will have to do.

If you REALLY miss the way it was, you can go to each category separately Comics and Minis.  I’d just rather have them together in a long list… ya know… and not cause the site to self explode.  Man PHP is hard!  XP

In other news, check out the site AKINATOR.com!!!! It’s 20 questions but with people/characters both fictional and real.  I only stumped it once with Coffinshaker.  These things boggle my mind!

And… Done!

by Coffinshaker on June 7, 2011 at 12:56 am

Coffin Comics is finally back up and running 20% cooler!

All the archives should be fixed and everything just flows all happily.  Ah… a small achievement that probably I’ll be the only one to notice, but it makes me happy… so… yup.

If anyone notices anything out of the ordinary, please let me know!  Like broken links or something acting funky.  Pretty sure I caught everything… but ya know how it goes.

Also moved an adbox to help give it a bit more exposure… it kind of fell off into the abyss on the home page.  Hope they’re not too obnoxious… cause ya know… they help get money for me.  Now that I look at it… I might move the mini button ads too… idk yet…

Coffin Comics v2.0!

by Coffinshaker on June 6, 2011 at 3:52 am

That’s right!  I figured it out!  I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT!  WOOT!

After hours of racking my brains, I discovered a simple little easy addition of code that makes my site run 2 layouts based on the comic size!  The down side…  Because I didn’t set it up right from the begining, I have to go back through all the archives to re-upload all the images.  Tedious and there’s over 100 minis and big comics, so… it may take a few days to get back to normal.  Keep in mind… I have no idea what I’m doing, so I’m sure if I was some kind of PHP guru, it’d have been done in a few minutes.

Hopefully you guys like the new place.  Nothing really groundbreaking has changed, other than the minis and fridays are streamlined so you can navigate back and forth through them.  The archives will be slightly messed up until I finish though.  Anyways, my hopes are that it makes it easier to sift through the comics (and help generate a little more exposure for the minis, cause they kind of get lost in the shuffle).

Also, I’d like to thank Max Vaehling, a fellow webcomic artist over at The Dreadful Gate, who helped with some of the coding and put me on the right path to fixing this!

Adventures in Conland Day 3

by Coffinshaker on March 27, 2011 at 9:59 pm

Awe, we it’s all over now!  Back to my comfy chair and blazing internets!  Woo!  But I have to say I had a lot of fun this weekend.  Met some new artists, met some awesome fans, made a few friends, and sold a few goodies.  Not bad for my first big con, eh?

Today wasn’t as busy as yesterday, but it was pretty nice to get out from behind the table, even for a few minutes.  Stretch the ol legs.  Buy some art… and a cool little turtle keychain thing… *cough*

But ya know, I gotta say there’s one thing I’m very disappointed in… I saw only 1 group of Battlestar Galactica folk, but only in pilot gear (granted they were awesome!  even had the backwards black tank top undershirts!  lol)… So next year folks, I want to see some people in the formal uniforms or in full cylon robot suits!  Make it happen!  So say we all!!

OH!  I forgot to mention the other day!  I got interviewed for a webcomic podcast!  >D  I’ll keep an eye on his site and give you guys a link when he posts it.  Hope it turns out ok… I uh… am not really all that great with talking into those little machines (as anyone who has had voicemail from me can agree) and in my head I swear I sound like some kind of muppet on voice recorders… Either way, it’ll be interesting.  heh.

Anyways, folks, I’d like to thank everybody for making this event so wonderful!  My friends, family, and everybody I got to meet!  Thanks Yall!!!  >D
